Topic: Reviewed her essay, read an article, and summarized it (speaking followed by writing)
Feedback provided to the tutee: I went through the essay she'd written for a class and noticed she used Google Translate for some more challenging words when I asked her to define them, she didn't know what they meant, in order to remedy this I gave her the definitions through visual aids, and scenarios and she was able to come up with simpler words that she would be able to remember in place of the more difficult ones. During her summary of the article she read, we talked out the main ideas in the article, and I helped her find her words when she was unable to say precisely what she was thinking. We practiced as much talking as time would allow because that was her biggest challenge.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that I need to take the time with my tutee to review any reading or listening that she does in class because she does need that extra time to better understand the material. I learned that she knows what words mean on paper and can read them, but understanding them in real-time conversation is difficult for her. When I arrived at the session, I asked her how her day was going, and I had to explain what I meant for a little longer until she understood what I was asking her. I took that as a signal for me to do as much speaking with her as possible and give her time and patience when she crafts her response. I also learned that correcting trivial errors is not the way to approach her because she knows what she is trying to say. I need to allow her the time to use her vocabulary rather than just correcting her grammar in speech before she completes a thought.
