Daniella TS #2 and #3
Tutoring session #2 and #3: October 26 2pm
Date/Time: Saturday October 6 2pm
Location: Student union
Topic/Skill: Diagnostic exam
Feedback provided to the tutee: Today Miguel completed the diagnostic exam I made for him. This consisted of testing grammar and composition with verb tenses, short paragraph writing for composition, reading comprehension with multiple choice questions, a speaking activity done with the shadowing method. And a listening activity done with a spoken script. I found that I made the exam a little too difficult as he told me he wanted to be challenged so a lot of the diagnostic was me modeling and then him being able to complete the exercises on his own. I was able to correct all his errors immediately after each question by writing down my own response on another piece of paper.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The lesson that I learned is that you have to keep asking a tutee whether or not they understand the topic at hand. I ended up putting some verb tenses that he had not yet learned and he didn’t tell me until I had to explicitly ask him if he had learned it. Often I feel that with adults maybe they feel ashamed admitting they don’t know elementary english but it’s good to remind them that you are there to help them to learn and not to judge them.
