Emilie TS #5
Student: Geena K.
Date/Time: Friday Nov. 1st, 1 pm
Location: In-person, CIES Building
Topic: Watching & Understanding a video; planning for writing project.
Feedback provided to the tutee: For our lesson we first watched a short (approx. 25 mins) episode of Marvel's series What If (in English with English captions), without pausing. Then, we had a discussion about what Geena liked about the episode and--since she is knowledgeable about Marvel--how this episode differed from the original movie (since each episode centers around an "alternate ending/universe" to a Marvel storyline). I tried not to interrupt her too much with corrections, but I often prompted her with discussion questions.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I found out that Geena is actually a very fiction-minded writer in her native language and has written stories on her own. Since it's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, aka November) I proposed that we maybe brainstorm a way to either jointly write (together) or parallel write (each write something different) a short story for November. This will provide plenty of opportunities for speaking (brainstorming especially), writing, reading, and error correction. She also seemed to be interested in the topic, and I want to continue to help draw her into her hobbies in English. We created 2 shared Google docs--one for our reading discussions/summaries (of a book series she is going through) and one for writing plans--in order to keep ourselves on track for next time.
