Topic: Subjunctive Tense

Feedback provided to tutee: Today we emphasized speaking with the subjunctive tense. We followed the structure provided by a textbook she had, and she did a really good job since she memorized the patterns and rules for the tense. Part of her struggle included understanding the differences in some of the verbs associated with this tense (suggest, ask, demand, urge, etc.) I explained that while they all are technically synonyms, they have different connotations and levels of severity when used in American English.

Lessons I learned about teaching: I think parts of this session were frustrating for her because she told me there isn't a similar tense like this in her native language, so she struggles with gaining automaticity. I learned that in cases like this it's very important to encourage the student and celebrate the small wins with them. The intermediate level takes a long time to make progress in compared to the beginner level, so encouragement is important.
