Topic: Listening Comprehension
Feedback provided to tutee: In this session we practiced the listening portion of the TOEFL exam. The section included listening to conversations, some formal or informal, or lecture topics. During the exercise, I sat with her and did the activity for myself, taking notes and answering questions. She got every question correct, however it her speed that prevented her from finishing the section. We talked about note taking, and how it can be hard to take notes when the lecturer is talking quickly, however you can write down main points that will jog your memory later.
Lessons about teaching I learned: I learned that listening can be overwhelming, and trying to take notes can lead some students to freeze up or give too much of their focus to the wrong thing. I found that teaching how to recognize tone and emphasis can be helpful, especially when listening on these exam practices. If the lecturer places a lot of emphasis on a word or repeats a term a lot you know it's important. This helped ease the anxiety of trying to note down every little thing, and instead focus on the big ideas.
