Feedback provided to tutee: We continued our lesson from the last time of dissecting terms and concepts from the video about the Renaissance. This time, we focused more on vocabulary terms that were unfamiliar to her. I focused on providing her with synonyms and antonyms, as this will help expand her vocabulary. In this session, a lot of my feedback was centered on her pronunciation and usage. Her grammar is very advanced, and I’m finding that she’s hardly making grammatical errors relating to verb tenses or agreements, but her struggle areas are in the pronunciation and fluidity in her speech.
Lessons about tutoring you learned: I learned that provided synonyms can be very very useful. When explaining new words to her, I would give both a literal definition in addition to giving her synonyms, and she found the synonyms much more useful. She also expressed to me that the hardest part of English is the sheer amount of words compared to Chinese. English has so many words that mean the exact same thing, and learning when to use which word is a very difficult skill that is difficult even for native speakers.
