Topic: Listening Practice

Feedback provided to tutee: During this session, we watched a short clip from the TV show Friends. I would pause the clip after a few sentences, and ask her to summarize (to the best of her ability) what was going on in the scene. This was a really helpful technique because there were lots of parts that she did not understand because the characters would speak in euphemisms. I explained what euphemisms were and how they were used, and how they require a lot of cultural context when watching an American show like Friends.

Lessons about tutoring I learned: I learned that especially with listening activities, it's important to pause and repeat parts to ensure comprehension. As I recall from the textbook chapter on listening, often students can get really frustrated with listening activities if they feel it is beyond their level, since they may not be able to understand the entire thing. I tried to encourage her that a big part of this conversational speaking pattern will include paying attention to tone of voice and facial expressions. A lot of the speech in the scene was very sarcastic, and this is a concept we had to spend a lot of time on.
