Student: Wei Wang
Date/Time: November 19th, 11:30am-12:30pm
Location: Museum of Fine Arts
Topic: Reading Practice
Feedback provided to tutee: We walked around the museum and looked at the different pieces and read the description panels. I noticed she was hesitant to read these and wanted to go straight to making assumptions about what was going on in the work. I had to remind her to practice reading the descriptions, and if there were unfamiliar words we could talk about them so she would understand. I think this was a good activity because the reading level was pretty academic, although the content was a bit unfamiliar to her since it heavily focused on American history.
Lessons about tutoring I learned: I learned that in order to fully comprehend a text it can take a lot of repetition and time. I recalled our discussion on the differences between listening and reading teaching practices, and a benefit to reading is that the student can go at whatever pace they need to ensure understanding. This became clear to me as we both would read the same paragraph for the first time, and it took her a longer time to understand it.
