Tessa TS #9

Date/Time: November 20th, 4pm-5pm
Location: Dirac Library
Topic: Grammar Practice
Feedback Provided to tutee: Today we practiced the conditional tenses. Specifically, we practiced the present conditional tense, the zero, first, second, third, and forth types. The hardest parts for her included the use of modal verbs: could, would, and should. I used fill in the blank exercises so she could put these into productive use, and these helped her see how these tenses should be used.
Lessons I learned about tutoring: I have never heard of the different “types” of the conditional form that she had in her textbook, so I had to learn how to adapt to this new strategy and still make a productive and effective lesson. I also became aware of the difficulty that lies in being a native speaker and not learning English in this way. Some of her questions I could not answer, and I had to tell her it is just the most common way of speaking. For example, the sentence “she would have come to the party if she was free” was confusing to her because the sentence describes a present situation, although past tense language is used.
